HOW IT WORKS
- A water pressure tank stored up to 85 liters of pressurized water.
- Additional line pressure was provided by detachable auxiliary air tanks.
- It activates autonomously using a thermostat, battery pack and solenoid valve, and the outlet pressure is regulated using a pressure regulator.
- Its entirety can be easily installed and dismantled from one location to another and lengths of tubing and nozzles can easily be added and removed.
- When submitted to a subzero ambient air temperature ranging from -7.08°C to 0°C, with the misting system functional, the flesh of the studied tomatoes remained at temperatures, on average, between 3.09°C and 3.58°C warmer than the surrounding outside recorded temperatures. The use of the system is limited by the formation of ice on the misting nozzles and in the water lines due to thermostat inaccuracy or drastic drops in temperature.
Overall the cost of the device was ~CAN590$. Most of the cost was associated with the purchasing of the water tank and required steel fittings. The final cost can vary depending on the total length of misting lines installed and number of auxiliary air tanks used.
